Inauguration of new B. Braun production plant - i+o responsible for general planning of construction of new factory at location in Switzerland

On June 17, the ceremonial inauguration of the new production plant of B.Braun Medical AG took place. The Pharma manufacturer assigned i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation with the new construction at the existing factory premises in Crissier near Lausanne. Together with its subsidiary PhC PharmaConsult, the team of experts was responsible for the general planning of a new high tech production plant for infusion bags.

About 200 guests came to the official inauguration of the new production plant, among them was also Prof. Dr. h. c. Ludwig Georg Braun, chairman of the B. Braun Melsungen AG management board. In his speech, councilor of the canton de Vaud, Jean-Claude Mermoud, praised B. Braun’s large investments in the region and the securing of more than 350 jobs related to the investments. Project manager Dr. Bruno Legrand was obviously delighted, too: “It is incredible how much was achieved in the short time after the laying of the foundation stone. The timetable could be kept despite unfavorable weather conditions and various unexpected challenges. The high professionalism and experience of i+o was a great help to us“.

With a total size of about 9,000 square meters in the first expansion stage, the two-storey new factory building supports the existing production facility. The facility was designed in a modular way with regard to height, thus allowing for flexible capacity expansion by adding further stories. The new „Center of Excellence“ is located on the ground floor and was mainly designed for the production of the multi-compartment pouches. A second story with a size of 4,000 m² completes the building. On that story, further production lines can be installed in the future.

In the future, the Crissier location will be the central production plant for multi-compartment infusion pouches. In Crissier, about 350 employees will produce more than 42 million units a year. Afterwards, the multi-compartment pouches will be delivered to the L.I.F.E. Nutrition Factory in Melsungen, Germany, for further filling. At its headquarters, B. Braun operates one of the most modern infusion solutions production facilities in Europe and has its own logistics center.

As it is the case in current major projects in Germany – like the production plant L.I.F.E. Nutrition – B. Braun counts on the expertise of i+o and its subsidiary PhC also in Switzerland. The consultancy team developed a concept study for the new factory building in Crissier and was responsible for the engineering and the entiree project management. Further tasks comprised the design and detailed planning as well as the handing-over of the first construction phase.

The project planners paid particular attention to an optimum process design according to international GMP requirements. In the pharma and food industries particularly strict guidelines concerning quality, security and traceability apply. Especially in these fields, the long-lasting experience of the Heidelberg-based consultancy played a great role. Ernst Sander, managing director of PhC and project manager says: „A considerable challenge was the enormously short time frame of 18 month – between the beginning of the detailed design and the end of the construction work. By working hand in hand, we were able to handle the project efficiently and in accordance with the time and cost frame“.

As it was the case at the group’s new headquarters building in Melsungen, which won several awards, B. Braun also set high standards with regard to the architectonical design of the Crissier site. The building is supposed to connect functional and aesthetic aspects and to be integrated harmoniously into the landscape. When planning the production plant, a large number of environmental aspects like heat recovery or sewage neutralisation were in the focus.

i+o builds sustainable in-flight catering facility in Delhi

i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation GmbH & Co. KG is currently building a new in-flight catering facility for Oberoi Flight Services at Indira Gandhi International airport (IGI). Oberoi Flight Services is among the four largest flight catering companies in India. The ultra modern building is going to set new standards with regard to sustainability and energy efficiency. Furthermore, the building will be well adapted to Delhi‘s climate conditions. The facility is supposed to start already operating in February 2011.

In building the new flight kitchen, i+o is not only responsible for the concept of the building complex and the sustainable in-house technology, but also for the entire building process. A little more than six months only are planned for the building of the in-flight catering facility. The reason for the tight schedule is the expansion of IGI airport; at the beginning of July terminal 3 was opened. The third largest passenger terminal worldwide is to process about 40 million passengers a year. The considerable expansion of the airport’s capacities required Oberoi Flight Services to build a new catering facility. About 15,000 meals daily are supposed to be produced in the new flight kitchen.

Due to years of experience in realising in-flight catering systems, i+o is once again able to set standards with the in-flight catering facility in Delhi – especially with regard to sustainability. “The technical requirements of in-flight catering are constantly changing. This leads to new challenges. As far as the facility at IGI airport is concerned, the main challenge are the climatic conditions, as in summer, temperatures easily exceed 40 degrees Celsius“, explains Tan, Hang Seong, Managing Director of i+o’s office in Singapore and project leader in Delhi. In Delhi, he is responsible for the entire process, which – among other things – includes the goods flow in the food and non-food sector.

According to “form and function in concert“, the building complex is designed to perfectly meet the requirements of an ultra modern, sustainable and efficient catering facility. E.g. the building material is derived from local stone quarries. On the roof of the future main building, India’s largest photovoltaic facility is going to be built in an area of 4,000 square metres. The facility is not only going to produce a high percentage of the required electricity, but also going to provide sun protection to the main building and – at the same time – cooling it. Hanging plants on the south side will provide further shadow and cooling. A concrete wall of about 60 centimetres at the west side of the building offers further protection against the heat, as it saves the heat during the day and releases it again at night.

Another innovation of the sustainable concept is the creation of a garden on top of the main building. Local spices are supposed to be grown there, which can then be directly used for the preparation of the meals. The garden is part of a green area of about 2,100 square metres, which additionally is going to cool the building. The garden is watered by a sprinkler system, which is fed by a subterranean reservoir disposing of the capacity to hold 2-days of consumption. The reservoir collects rain water as well as waste water from the dish washing facility and turns the water into usable water by filtering it. The thus created circulation saves precious water.

The new catering facility comprises a production building and a support building. The latter houses the staff restaurant and the administration. The employees will exclusively enter the main building by using a bridge in the 2nd floor. This procedure increases security and hygiene, as the only entrance to the catering are can be easily controlled. What is special about the architecture of the two buildings is the modular way in which they are being built. E.g. there are four stairways in the main building that are constructed in an identical way, including elevator and supplier holes. Rooms and hallways on the single floors are also designed in a uniform way.

Torsten Brendel, General Manager of i+o’s office in Dubai and responsible for waste disposal and the washing facility in Delhi, explains the reasons for the special way of building the facility: “One reason is that it increases safety in dangerous situations – for example in the case of fire – as the employees can orient themselves and find the exits more easily. Another reason is that the construction period is very short, as the modular way of building increases the pace of building significantly. This leaves more time for concept and fine planning of the facility, which requires a lot of special expertise”.

In-flight catering is an important part in the portfolio of the Heidelberg-based consultancy. i+o has played an important part in planning and realizing more than 15 project developments worldwide. The facility of LSG Sky Chefs at Frankfurt airport and the new in-flight catering facility of Emirates Flight Catering in Dubai – a subsidiary of Emirates – were among these projects. In terms of quantity, the in-flight catering facility in Dubai is currently the world’s largest of its kind.

Hospital Build – a successful fair for i+o Dubai

In addition to the successful fair participation of i+o at the Gulfood in the United Arab Emirates, i+o Dubai took part with a booth at another significant fair of the Middle East. The Hospital Build Middle East (1-3 June) is a must for all decision-makers in the healthcare industry. Therefore it was an important platform for i+o to make new contacts and to discuss trends and developments of the industry with customers and business partners.

i+o can look back on many years of well-founded experience when it comes to planning large utilities, e.g. in the healthcare sector– and its customers can rest assured that i+o will also always focus on the latest developments and technologies. This has enabled i+o to draft, plan and realise innovative solutions for many of its customers. In doing so, material flow planning, automatisation, refrigeration engineering and hygiene regulations also play a central role.

Quite recently, i+o Singapore received the assignment for developing a food supply concept for the new Jurong General Hospital, Singapore. Furthermore i+o also received the order to plan the clinic pharmacy, the central sterilization, the laundry supply, the in-house logistics and the waste management of the hospital.

SAP Implementation in Biotechnology – Rentschler ROOT goes SAPril!

On April 1st, 2010, a new era of integrated information processing started with the new business year at Rentschler Biotechnologie GmbH as well as at the other companies of the group. The Going Live of SAP ECC 6.0 as new central ERP system is both starting and centre point after less than one year’s time of implementation in order to introduce ROOT projects productively.

Rentschler Biotechnologie GmbH is a worldwide acting full-service contract manufacturing organisation with more than 30 years of experience in development, production and authorisation of biopharmaceutical active ingredients. The Laupheim-based company meets international standards of good manufacturing practice (GMP) and has more than nine independent GMP suites with a volume of 30, 50, 250, 500 and 2,500 litres to produce material for clinical studies (Phase I-III) and market supply. Furthermore, Rentschler offers regulatory consultancy, protein analytics, quality control and the sterile filling of syringes as well as of injection vials.

The formula for success for implementing on schedule was a project management with defined roles of team management, specialist divisions and IT experts. “In particular, methods of change management had already been of importance at an early project stage in order to convince the staff of the advantages of the new solutions. Thomas Kilimann becomes Vice Chairman in the regional group of BME e.V.

The regional group Palatinate/ Rhine-Neckar of BME (Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik e.V.) has regularly offered speeches and plant visits dealing with purchasing management and logistics to regional companies for many years. The recently elected managing committee is now supported by Mr. Kilimann, Managing Director/ Partner of i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation, as Vice Chairman and representative of the delegates meeting.

BME represents a platform for discussion and network for purchasers in Germany. Members of these events are not only member companies of BME but also non-member companies as well as private members. The regional group Palatinate/ Rhine-Neckar of BME could denote a considerable increase of members in the last stint of the managing committee. On the one hand, this is put down to the high quality of events, and, on the other hand, especially younger purchasers (Young Professionals) have been successfully addressed.

“This kind of regional association work is important to keep in touch with the market“, Kilimann says, “in addition, it is exciting to play a part in such working groups, to acquire new knowledge and pass it on by delivering speeches. The exchange with other companies is an interesting aspect too“.

i+o booth at facility planning conference „Fachkonferenz Fabrikplanung“

From the green field strategy of a completely new building to the redesign and adjustment of the single workplaces – facility planning is responsible for the change of physical and organisational structures. Therefore, every facility planner is an expert when it comes to change and is proficient in the interplay between realising the new and maintaining the proven. Again, i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation was represented with a booth, showing how facility expansion or redesign can achieve an increasing productivity on the basis of interesting project examples.

All facilities need to be designed strategically as well as in an operatively versatile way. Therefore, facility reorganisation needs to be done during process and also needs to be sturdy against extreme changes. But fit for the future also means that the company image can be expressed through the design of the industrial building and that also new environmental and economic goals can be achieved by optimisation of the energy usage. All of these topics were discussed at the congress, giving precise recommendations of procedures to the planer.

Successful completion of the Concept phase for EVA Pharma

PhC PharmaConsult and its MENA partner Akhnaton have worked together since 1973. More than 30 projects have been successfully developed together during that time, now follows this next large project in Egypt. The pharmaceutical producer EVA Pharma is, together with Akhnaton, a member of the Armanious Group and therefore values the expertise PhC brings to the project.

PhC, a subsidiary of i+o Industry Planning + Organization, has developed the master plan as well as an integrated process and building concept for EVA Pharma. The new facility primarily designed to produce solid and sterile pharmaceuticals and antibiotics is planned to be located in 6th October City near Cairo. All required support facilities including logistics, administration, quality control, research and development labs will be integrated into the complex.

The challenge for PhC has been to prepare a master plan which is flexible for future expansion and can be implemented in the shortest time frame possible whilst minimising investment outlay. Special attention has been paid to creating an intelligent architectural solution leaning on traditional Egyptian building techniques to respect the effect of the harsh desert climate on the internal environment. Implementation of both passive and active environmentally friendly energy solutions has been a key PhC goal. With the completion of this vital concept phase EVA Pharma now has achieved a first visionary step towards their new future. The next steps are planned to continue on this path and PhC looks forward to supporting Eva Pharma in the following basic and detailed design phases.

i+o took part in the 19th German congress for material flow, “Materialflusskongress”

On April 15th and 16th, 2010, more than 500 experts met for the 19th time at the premises of the TU Munich-Garching to extensively exchange experiences across the field of logistics. The German congress for material flow is an important industry gathering for technical logisticians in Germany, who catch up on realized projects, trends and latest developments. This year, i+o participated once again. Beside i+o’s own booth, Thomas Kilimann led a moderation round during the first day.

LogistikDesign – Thomas Kilimann publishes practice-oriented book

The logistics industry has increasingly moved into the center of corporate action. Germany’s third largest industry generates a turnover of more than 190 billion euros per year, and European producers of technical logistics systems are leading worldwide. Green logistics has increasingly become a focus topic; as a reduction in CO2 and environmental protection measures have become an important competitive factor for companies. However, not only in Germany the logistics industry continues to change; the challenges concerning the organisation and optimisation of the supply chain grow on a daily basis – regionally and globally.

Thomas Kilimann, managing director / partner of i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation, was motivated to write his new specialist book by numerous projects and discussions with international managers and project managers. In his book, which is entitled “LogistikDesign – Supply Chain Projekte zum Erfolg führen” (“Logistics Design – make supply chain projects a success”), he refers to various practical insights in different industries and companies, and gives a detailed overview on the diversity of the logistics industry. In doing so, Mr Kilimann also allows for the increasing demand for a structured and practice-orientated handling of this complex topic.

Detthold Aden, chairman of the executive board of the BLG LOGISTICS GROUP, says in the foreword: “This book refers to all those who need a method and toolset to organise their logistics”. The author, Thomas Kilimann, has engaged in this topic for a long time; in particular in terms of an integral solution for sustainable corporate success. With his new book, the expert for the development of supply chain strategies offers a specific manual for structuring logistics questions and gives advice how to solve them.

Successful participation at the “Factory of the year“ Congress - Interview with Thomas Kilimann

The eighteenth round of the annual benchmark competition “Factory of the year/ Global Excellence in Operations“ ended on March 15th and 16th, 2010. The congress is one of the most challenging and established congresses of its kind; and, at the end of the competition, every participating company receives an analysis about the companies it competes with.

The competition awards projects that have shown first class performance in the entire value added chain. This year’s winners have been able to successfully stand up to their competitors and have highlighted their ability to react quickly and efficiently to changes.

Thomas Kilimann, CEO / Partner of i+o, gave his estimation on the subject “investment power”. In an interview, Mr Kilimann describes the current economic situation with the words: “We won`t see big investments this year, at least not in the industries of mechanical engineering, plant construction or the automotive industry, we should, however, pay special attention to how the industry will prepare itself for the next growth, which will especially be expected to take place abroad.

With about 20 exhibitors and approximately 200 participants, the “Factory of the year / Global Excellence in Operation“ Congress belongs to the most important industry meetings in Germany.

Emerging more strongly from the crisis: i+o registers order records

Apparently, almost every branch was affected by the economic crisis. Many key industries, like automotive, manufacturing, or transport and logistics had troubles with the recession. New projects were allocated slowly and many projects were postponed or completely cancelled. i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation gives a totally different summary. In 2009, the Heidelberg-based consultancy still saw an increase in staff against the previous year. In particular, the expansion on the growing markets of Asia and the Persian Gulf was pacesetter for further positive developments. In the last five years, the company has annually grown by 30 percent on average. In 2008, i+o had a record turnover.

Especially in China, i+o acquired new large-scale projects, for example the general planning of two manufacturing plants for China’s largest producer of antibiotics, North China Pharmaceuticals Group Corp (NCPC). In November 2009, China’s largest insulin producer, Wanbang Biopharma, assigned the Heidelberg-based consultancy with the general planning of a facility for production, filling and packaging of insulin products. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the insulin facility will produce according to international GMP requirements, primarily for exports to Europe and the US.

Asia’s second giant, India, has increasingly developed to become a strategic future market, especially due to its strong focus on domestic demand. Investments in the logistics infrastructure, e.g. in airports, are supposed to allow for this development. With more than 23 million passengers every year and more than half a million ton air cargo, the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, is facing rapid development, because – in the long run – 75 million passengers are to be processed. Therefore, the leading airline caterer, Oberoi Flight Services, assigned i+o with the planning of a new state-of-art flight catering facility, which – as of 2011 – is supposed to produce up to 30,000 meals.

In 2009, i+o saw the largest amount of incoming orders in its corporate history. A project at the Persian Gulf, initiated by the investment association Emirates Advanced Investments (EAI), has a major share in that development; a new comestible factory for the production of sterilized meals is arising. i+o is responsible for the entire planning of this mega project and is designing the new facility according to the current GMP and HACCP standards. The amount invested amounts to nearly 40 million euros. With the volume of incoming orders in 2009, i+o beat its own record result of 2008. The order books for 2010 are also well-filled, and the Heidelberg-based consultancy is looking curiously and well-prepared into the future.

Lively attendance at LogiMAT 2010 - Quality meets decision-makers

From 2 to 4 March 2010, international exhibitors and decision-makers from industry, trade and the service sector came together at the new exhibition centre at Stuttgart Airport to find new business partners. This year, too, i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation was again presented at the fair and rejoiced had many visitors during all three fair days.

i+o presented a selection of logistics projects showing how already successfully working supply chains can be made even more effective. Visitors and the press alike were very interested in the projects on display. Interesting talks, a relaxing atmosphere and excellent “Fingerfood – artwork” allowed the visitors of i+o both number. 309, in hall 5, to get away from the fair’s every day life for a short time.

Intersectorally and globally, i+o analyses complex logistics and value added chains to determine synergy effects and cost saving potential. The service range also comprises conceptual planning incl. the development of tender documents, supporting the realisation as well as the overall project management up to the acceptance of the construction work.

Assignment for developing a food supply concept for the new Jurong General Hospital, Singapore

i+o received the assignment for developing a food supply concept for the new Jurong General Hospital. In addition to the food supply, i+o also received the order to plan the clinic pharmacy, the central sterilization, the laundry supply, the in-house logistics and the waste management.

One special challenge of this project is the variety of eating habits in the Asia- Pacific region that have to be considered. In addition to the common hospital meal varieties, such as whole food, balanced diet or diet for diabetics, the food for the Muslim patients also needs to be prepared according to the Halal rules – the dietary rules of the Islam. Especially when facing this challenge, i+o was able to revert to the expertise of numerous international in-flight catering projects. From the very beginning, i.e. during the goods delivery as well as during storage, preparation and transport, the Halal and non-Halal food needs to be strictly separated.

Another specialty for the i+o planning team arises from the regional eating habits in South East Asia, where three warm meals a day are normal. Therefore, the food supply in the hospital includes breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an afternoon snack. Additionally, the so called “Milo”, a grain coffee, is served with pastry after dinner.

A modern and process-oriented food supply is of great importance for hospital operators, not only in Germany. In the growing markets of Asia, the demand for intelligent supply chain solutions for the clinic catering is constantly growing. One example is the new Jurong General Hospital, presently developing in the Western part of Singapore. With a capacity of about 700 beds it will comprise in-patient and ambulant care as well as a rehab area close by. The hospital is planned to start operating at the end of 2014, together with the adjoining Community Hospital, which has 200 beds.

Successful Participation in the 15th Gulfood, Dubai

Already at the beginning of this year, i+o joint one top event of the foodservice and hospitality sector. The Gulfood exhibition belongs to the leading events for Food and Drink in the Middle East. The fair took place in the Dubai World Trade Center. i+o had a stand at the German Pavilion in the Zabeel Hall.

During this four-day event, from the 21st to the 24th of February, i+o had the opportunity to get in touch with many food related companies and to exchange ideas and views with them as well as to catch up on latest innovations.

i+o has purchased catering / food know-how for decades and can provide a qualitative and quantitative high degree of planning and realising catering facilities. Many well-known customers belong to i+o’s project partners such as Emirates Flight Catering, LSG SkyChefs, Oberoi Flight Services, Rudolf WILD, Wiberg etc. For several years, i+o has also been represented with its own office in Dubai, whereform projects have been successfully processed and realised.

The Gulfood Conference is an important platform, not only for many industry representatives but also for i+o. That is why i+o has already been planning its next participation in the Gulfood 2011 – taking place from the 20th to the 23rd of February.

The life cycle management and the sustainability in planning, building and engineering of estates is a main focus of i+o’s project management. During the last year i+o has already won an important partner in Mauritz Freiherr von Strachwitzfor the field of project management.

Mr. von Strachwitz has been part of the program committee of the ILM (Immobilien Lebenszyklus Management-Konferenz, engl. Estates Life Cycle Management Conference) together with 22 other members. This year the ILM will join with the Consense, an international congress for sustainable building, taking place on the 22nd and 23rd of June 2010 at Stuttgart, Germany. i+o plans high-tech insulin facility in China - Contract being signed with Wanbang in Xuzhou

China’s largest insulin producer Wanbang Biopharma assigned the Heidelberg, Germany based i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation with the general planning of a facility for production, filling and packaging of insulin products. With state-of-the-art technology the insulin facility will produce during the first building stage about 130 Mio units per year, predominantly for exporting to Europe and the USA. In the process the i+o planning team is facing the special challenge that the complete production process needs to adhere to international GMP requirements.

At the province Jiangsu, about 500 km North East of Shanghai, the new pharmaceutical facility will be built on an area of about 8,000 sqm. in which after completion of the building more than 10 different insulin products will be produced. Pre-filled syringes, ready to use with precise dosing, as well as ampullaes and carpoules, pharmaceutical glass packaging to be used e.g. for injection systems, all belong to the product range. In its domestic market Wanbang is, with a market share of 50% the largest insulin producer. The new site will especially be producing for the European as well as for the US American market.

“The decision to build an ultra-modern facility is of outstanding strategic importance”, William Wu, Director at Wanbang Biopharma says. “Therewith we ensure our business expansion in the Asian market and at the same time we can develop new international markets.” Invest for the new pharmaceutical facility sums up to approximately €21 million for the first building stage. The Heidelberg based consulting company i+o was already assigned with the general planning of the first two steps, concept design and draft planning. i+o ensures that all manufacturing processes in the new facility will be organized according to applicable EU and U.S: FDA (Food and Drug Administration) GMP requirements. Wanbang expects the start of construction of the insulin facility for August 2010. The first building step of the facility is to start its productivity at the beginning of 2013.

With regard to the worldwide increasing demand for the diabetes drug insulin, the i+o planning team has designed the new manufacturing facility of Wanbang in a way that capacities can be extended at any time. “We are very proud of supporting Wanbang Biopharma in strengthening its market position,” Dr Frank Hähner says, responsible project manager at i+o. With its office in Shanghai, the consulting company is very well positioned in the fast-growing Asian pharmaceutical market. Already in February 2009, the pharmaceutical giant NCPC entrusted i+o with the general planning of two new antibiotic facilities which shall produce around 7 billion of capsules and 3,5 billion of pills.
