MAN breaks ground for MAN Logistics Center in Salzgitter

Heidelberg - Dec 2, 2009

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has officially broken ground in Salzgitter/ Lower Saxony. The construction of a new logistics centre of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge has thus started. The facility is located very close to the MAN production plant on an 188,000 sq-m site. The logistics building will offer 52,000 sq m of space for storage and worldwide distribution of spare parts for trucks, buses and components. i+o Industrieplanung + Organisation has been entrusted with the implementation company of the project.

Prior to the implementation phase, i+o developed together with MAN Nutzfahrzeuge a detailed site and supply strategy in order to take appropriate plant extension measures. Processes and an ideal type operational organization – adapted to logistics systems – have been compiled for Salzgitter. Here, the already existing IT system at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge was also taken into consideration.

i+o’s philosophy regarding the implementation of an industrial building involves functional tenders for general contractors. Being targeted at his strengths the general contractor can generate the plan of execution on the basis of bidding documents. The results are economical and functional buildings. With this, i+o consequently suits the action to the word according to its slogan “form and function developed in concert“.

“The new Logistics Centre will lead to further improvements in the international spare parts logistics of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge. Our decision for Salzgitter will strengthen this location, and, we will benefit from the close proximity to our production plant“, comments Ralf Kolshorn, Head of Spare Parts Management at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge.

The Logistics Centre is scheduled to open in late 2010. The property will be built by an investor being primarily specialized in logistics. The investment volume amounts to €63m in total.
